Geographical Introduction Paikgachha Upazila

A) Area and location: Area of ​​Paikgachha upazila is 383.87 sq. Km. Paikgachha upazila is situated between 22 degree 28 '' and 22 degree 43 '' north-south longitudes and 89 degree 14 '' and 89 degree 28 '' east-west longitudes. It is bounded on the north by Tala upazila of Satkhira district, on the east by Dakop and Batiaghata upazilas of Khulna district, on the south by Koyra upazila of Khulna district and on the west by Asashuni upazila of Satkhira district. Distance of Paikgachha upazila from Khulna district town by road is 65 km.

 

B) Naming: Paikgachha is an ancient and famous upazila of Khulna district. Paikgachha upazila is located 65 km south of Khulna district headquarters. Saral Dighi, Saral Khan's house and rice washing pond next to Kachari and police station pond on the other side of the road still exist as witnesses of the times. A few villages witnessed the work of the soldiers or staff of Saral Khan. The name of the area where Saral Khan lived is Saral. The name of the village where the cowshed was located was 'Ghoshal'. 'Batikhali', the area where the pike-barkandajas used to guard the trees, the 'paikgachha' and the dighi that was dug with the people-laskar are still carrying the reputation of simple khar as 'laskar' village. This is how Paikgachha Upazila was named. Paikgachha Upazila was developed under administrative decentralization on 7 November 1982.

 

 C) Historical Events: On 4 July 1971, a Razakar camp was set up at the house of Raybahadur Binod Bihari Sadhu in the famous business center of Paikgachha Upazila. Razakars and members of the Shamitma Committee carried out extensive looting, rape, arson, and massacres in the area. The beautiful young women and girls of the area were caught and kept in camps and raped and killed day after day. He raped and killed a girl named Ratna and threw her in the river. The people of the area and the members of the Mukti Bahini were shocked to see such a brutal killing. On 6 December 1971, the wartime commander Rahmat Ulsnah Dadu and his associates led by Yunus Ali, S, M, Babar Ali, Abul Kalam Azad, Shahadat Hossain Bachchu and the war-wounded Khoka launched a vicious campaign to capture the Razakar camp. After three days of continuous fighting, 156 Razakars and members of the Shamitma Committee were taken prisoner by the freedom fighters. The battle of Kapilmuni ended on 9 December with the killing of 156 members of the oppressive Razakars and Shamitma Committee. Even today, people from different parts of the country gather there to visit that place of historical Kapilmuni.

D) How to go there: You have to take a bus from Khulna Sadar and get off directly at Kapilmuni. The house of the historic Raisaheb Binod Bihari on the west side of Kapilmuni Bazar now stands as a witness of the times.
