World renowned scientist and chemist Sir Acharya Profulla Chandra Roy (P, C Roy ) was born on 2 August in 1861 at Raruli near the river Kapatakh in Paikgacha upazila of Khulna . His father Harischandra Roy was a landlord, skilled in Arabic, Persian and English. His mother was Bhuban Mahini Devi. Prafulla Chandra Roy was very much loved by his parents. His father used to call him Phulu. Phulu’s educational life began at the age of five. From 1866 to 1870 he spent four years in village primary school. Then in 1871 he was admitted to Calcutta Hair School. Then in 1874 he was admitted to Albert School. From here he passed entrance in1878 and F, A in 1881. He was admitted to Presidency College in1882 and moved to the University of Edinburgh getting Gilchrist Scholarship after completing graduation with honors. From here he took B, Sc degree. While Profulla Chandra was researching in Chemistry he surprised the world by inventing Marquiras Nitrite. Since then he received Ph, D in 1886, D, Sc in 1887, C,I,E in 1911, again D, Sc in 1912 and received the title Knight in 1918. He was unmarried. Numerous organizations established by him at home and abroad are still providing human service. However, the buildings of the birth place of the world renowned scientist P, C Roy known as Father Nitrite are still neglected. Different parts of the building are collapsing. In the post independence period, various attempts were made to occupy this building. In the first week of October, 2009 a local influential community took possession of the memorial homestead. The officials of all levels of administration including local people got entangled in this. In the face of fierce movement, the so called occupiers fled in the dark of night taking the valuable resources of the place. For the last few years, his birth and death anniversaries have been celebrated by the government. At present, the birth place of P, C Roy is being preserved by the Archaeological Department of the government. No one has been able to glorify the Bengali people in such a way except Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. P, C Roy was a scientist, philosopher and artist at the same time. He was motivated by humanitarianism in social reform. At that time, he introduced co- operative banking system for the development of the people. He established a co- operative bank in his birth place in 1909. In 1903 scientist sir P, C Roy established R, K, B, K Harischandra Institution with the names of four villages of south Bengal. He set up this educational institution in the name of his father. In the same place his father established Bhubanmahini Girls School in 1850 for the development of female education in this subcontinent. Even today, the institutions are moving forward in self- glory. People of all walks of life remember his established institutions at home and abroad and his scientific pursuits. Acharya Profulla Chandra Roy died on16th June in 1944 without any successor. Numerous institutions related to this world renowned scientist are still neglected. There is no direct road connection from Khulna district to the birth place of P,C Roy. It is disconnected from Paikgacha Upazila. The village of the father of Nitrite is still neglected. The main way of direct road transport is Boalia bridge on the Kapatakh. The bridge is still under construction. As a result many tourists do not come despite their desire due to underdeveloped transport system. According to the local people, if a tourist centre is built beside the home of this world renowned scientist, innumerable P,C Roy lovers from and abroad will be able to gain knowledge about the biography of the scientist. On the other hand, this neglected region will be known widely. Besides, the local people expect that necessary initiatives will be taken by the government to build a tourist centre with the preservation of the home of this world renowned scientist.
